flyXdrive is a spin-off from RWTH Aachen University. flyXdrive builds on unique knowhow and highly sophisticated technologies and has immediate access to holistic research infrastructure. In our team we combine the competence of relevant researchers in aviation, automotive and automation to achieve best solutions.

History

flyXdrive was founded in 2017 by Prof. Dieter Moormann, Head of Institute for Flight System Dynamics, and Prof. Lutz Eckstein, Head of Institute for Automotive Engineering, with the aim to combine their expertise and use synergies to provide 3D mobility solutions.

In many use cases for unmanned aerial vehicles a ground vehicle is involved, too. Therefore, the motivation of flyXdrive is to enable fully integrated intelligent systems. This includes intelligent, modular, logical, energetic as well as mechanical integration of the aerial and ground vehicle.

Partner

A strong collaboration between flyXdrive and the two RWTH Aachen University Institutes, Institute for Flight System Dynamics and Institute for Automotive Engineering Aachen exists.

The Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) of RWTH Aachen University is Europe’s leading institute in automotive engineering. Starting from the idea to innovative concepts for components and systems up to vehicle prototypes the staff of the institute creates and design the future vehicle.

ika employs more than 135 members of staff and about 200 student assistants.

The Institute for Flight System Dynamics of RWTH Aachen Univiersity focuses on development, automation and airspace integration of unmanned aerial vehicles. The spectrum of research ranges from the identification of flight mechanics parameters to the optimization of flight control systems. Experiments with original aircraft and scaled windtunnel or free-flight models are part of research as well as the development of software models and simulation of controllers and complete missions.
